At 96 degrees I wasn’t going to make it for a long run so I did a couple mile sprints. Best one was 7:40 which is a PR but still short of my interim 7:30 goal. I can’t believe I ran a 5:50 in high school. That’s not coming back! Getting old sucks. 🏃🔥🏃🔥

The WNBA🏀 kicked off last week with a couple really great games. Seeing Ionescu’s debut as well as Stewie back on the court was really exciting. This week, I’m looking forward to the MIN/SEA game on Tues, and the NY/DAL game on Wednesday.

Phil Schiller talking about camera resolutions and neural networks processing images for the new iPhone camera has a lot of the same feels as Intel talking about CPU speeds in the 90’s: a lot of tech talk that consumers don’t care about.

I’ve also never fired anyone over Twitter. The clown show continues. What a joke.

To me, being a parent often feels like an eternal cycle of yin and yang: my daughter watched The Notorious RBG and now wants to go into politics; my son just watched all 5 seasons of Silicon Valley and now wants to be an engineer…

This is a bit of a long shot, but if anyone knows any C# devs looking for an awesome wfh/remote position, please contact me. It’s a perm position with full benefits, etc. Only catch is that they need to occasionally be able to go onsite to a client in the Portland metro area.

Blazers win. Fewsh! 🏀

Doncic hits a “touch” 3 with 0.6 left to force overtime! Woah!!! 🏀

Blazers up 88-80 after 3. My 100 point chicken nuggets seem to be well within reach… 🏀

Deandre has a better ft shooting percentage this game than Nurkic… 🏀

Halftime. Blazers have managed to create a 10 point buffer. Nurkic is currently working on a triple double with 8, 10 and 5. Doncic is showing he’s a pretty big liability on defense. Hopefully the Blazers continue to exploit it. 🏀

The Blazers appear to have just realized that if they can move Deandre to the other side of the key, they can drive at will on the offside. 🏀

Seth Curry just stole the ball and instead of taking it in hard to the rim for a layin, he pulled up and drained a 3. Gutsy. 🏀

First quarter is over and it has largely been an uneventful 12 minutes. Blazers down 25-27. 🏀

Refs not liking Deandre. Just hit him with a lane violation on a free throw. 🏀

Chief just posterized Doncic! 🏀

The Dallas Mavericks resemble the team of middle school boys I used to coach going through their warmups. They are definitely not taking themselves too seriously. 🏀

Our society works best when our economic policies converge wealth towards the mean. Right now, in almost every country, wealth is unbalanced and the imbalance seems to be getting worse with every political upheaval that we read about in the news. I believe more than anything, this wealth disparity is the cause for things like Trump, Bolsonaro and Brexit: people would rather flip over the table and hope for something new rather than continue to sit with people they feel are actively working against them.…

It’s not often that we can publicly talk about what Silverpine is working on, so I’m stoked to be able to say that the new De Las Mias app/platform is going live today! It’s a gorgeous app for Android to help people live healthier lives. The founders, Sada and Ana are two of the nicest people you’ll ever meet and they really have a passion for helping the Latina community. We are very excited for them!

Did you know that Bruce Willis (yes THE Bruce Willis) had a top 100 single in 1987? And Eddie Murphy had a top 10 single in 1986?

Watching the Blazers/Rockets 🏀 game. Amazed by how lame Houston fans are. There are so many empty seats. Even court side seats are empty! I would understand maybe if The Rockets were terrible but they’re pretty great this year.

I setup a new Eero system today. It’s difficult to tell if things are actually better, but so far it’s been smooth.

To set the record straight, people in Oregon are NOT freaking out about pumping our own gas. That’s just lazy reporting.

I had to get the teens up at 9 today so that tomorrow’s 6:30 wake up won’t feel as harsh. It will still feel harsh…

The EBNF for Swift is on drugs. Requiring brackets after an if statement (while good coding practice) is a total crapping of the bed syntax-wise.

iOS 11 on the iPhone X is half baked and awkward. So many things are HARDER on this device. Force quitting apps, control center access, etc. I’m really hoping iOS 12 fixes it.

Got my X yesterday. Impressions so far: - Amazing camera! - Gorgeous display - Gesture navigation is a big step backwards from the home button - Face ID works but is slower and more effort for me to unlock my phone. Not a fan. - I really like the casing. Smooth but enough grip

I’m listening to Christmas music today. Come at me. I dare you.

When I was 15, my friend Brian Sims (who was older than me by a few months) got his license. He picked me up, and we cruised the streets of Tillamook, just the two of us. We listened to Free Fallin’ over and over as we drove gleefully around town, marveling at our newfound freedom.

Rest in peace, Tom.

Great article on Joey Crawford:

thelab.bleacherreport.com/regrets-h…

All right, so everything is finally installed/setup correctly. I’m following the basic guides at the official site and I now have my first Rails app! It’s not very exciting but going to localhost:3000 on my computer now gets you this:

Screen Shot 2016-05-17 at 11.24.28 AM

#rubyquest

I spoke too soon. It started failing because mysql wasn’t installed, however, trying to gem install mysql2 was throwing errors. The fix was to use Homebrew again and do:

brew install mysql

And then, after that, the gem install would work. (Did I mention this is arcane?)

#rubyquest

After fixing the issue with rbenv, things are going much more smoothly.

RubyGems is now installed. Trying to get Rails installed using Bundler.

#rubyquest

Ok, I guess you have to read the fine print on rbenv. You have to do this arcane rbenv init which displays a command that you need to paste into your ~/.bash_profile and then after doing that, reopen the shell. This is amazingly arcane.

#rubyquest

So to install Ruby, I had to:

  1. Install Brew package/app manager so that I could
  2. Install rbenv so that I could
  3. Install Ruby 2.2.2
Now I just have to install Rails…

#rubyquest

Well, Homebrew started throwing errors when I tried to update it with a “brew update” command. I had to uninstall it and reinstall it and now it seems happy. (I sincerely hope I didn’t break Cocoapods.) But, I did get rbenv installed!

#rubyquest

The project I’m going to hack on requires Ruby 2.2.2. Manton, recommends using rbenv to manage Ruby versions so I guess I’ll try and install that.

#rubyquest

Ok, turns out Ruby 2.0 comes installed on OS X. Also, it turns out that Homebrew (a supposedly good package manager for Ruby) is already installed as well. Maybe it came with Cocoapods?

#rubyquest

I’ve decided to bite the bullet and learn Ruby and Rails. I am instantly overwhelmed by the complexity. Gah!

#rubyquest
